Free Dump Day helps residents dispose of junk, hazardous waste
The City of Sacramento is helping residents get rid of their junk — for free.
On Saturday, May 3, from 8 to 11 a.m., the Recycling and Solid Waste Division will host a free Dump Day event to give residents an additional resource for waste disposal.
“Last year in just three hours, we collected over 23,000 tons of garbage and almost 10,000 tons of household hazardous waste and electronics,” said Jesa David, spokesperson for the division. “We hope Sacramento residents take advantage of this opportunity again.”
All City of Sacramento residents can dispose of large junk items, including furniture, electronics and household hazardous waste, at no charge at the Sacramento Recycling and Transfer Station, located at 8491 Fruitridge Road.
The entrance is on 84th Street, and signage will be posted to direct residents to the facility. The event will remain open until 11 a.m. unless capacity is reached.
Dump Day, offered in conjunction with Waste Management, is limited to City of Sacramento residents only. Participants must bring identification and be prepared to show a utility bill (paper or digital) with an address within city limits to dump free of charge.
Non-city residents may still dump items but will be charged the regular disposal rate.
Residents must be able to unload their own vehicles. No commercial-size trucks, including U-Haul trucks, will be permitted; only personal vehicles will be allowed.
General household garbage is acceptable, including furniture, select appliances, electronics, and materials such as metal, plastic, fiberglass, untreated wood and landscape trimmings. Anything recyclable will be diverted from the landfill.
Mattresses and box springs will be accepted with a limit of four each per vehicle. Tires will also be accepted, limited to four per vehicle, and must be removed from the rims.
Household hazardous waste, including paint, batteries, oils, acids, household chemicals, empty propane tanks and aerosol cans, will be accepted and processed separately.
The City will not accept appliances containing compressed or freon gas, such as refrigerators and air conditioners. Treated wood waste, concrete, asphalt, sand, brick, dirt, rocks and other construction and demolition materials will not be accepted.
